...and where there is darkness, let there be light! A glorious collection of facsimiles of illuminated manuscripts to be precise. Profusely illustrated with sumptuous colour plates on coated paper, the dazzling gold leaf of the original medieval manuscripts is especially splendidly photographed.
It's a catalogue of European manuscripts which are on display at the Calouste Gulbenkian museum in Lisbon, some of which have only relatively recently been restored after suffering flood damage in the late Sixties.
Gulbenkian, a British-American businessman and philanthropist, collected these works initially for his own pleasure but his legacy is now one of the largest foundations in Europe.
At the heart of all these works is the concept of time and eternity – a preoccupation of mankind throughout history from ancient philosophers and theologians to modern scientists – and a central theme of the exhibition is that of eternity being achieved not just through divine faith but through the telling and illustrating of stories, sacred or profane, through teaching and illuminating, through art itself.
